Awakening Student's curiosity - Blog post week 6
I resonated with the idea of awakening students' curiosity, as Bean notes. Students reading comprehension increases if they are already engaged with the problem that a reading addresses, or are interested in the subject matter.
I took my students to the Stanley museum and as we had a little extra time, had them do a 30 second, 1 minute and 3 minute exercise of their impressions of a given sculpture on the wall. After that, I had them construct a paragraph using PEEL (because on most of their papers, structuring a paragraph seemed the thing they struggled with).
I was really impressed by what they came up with in 3 minutes, so, I gave them the same assignment as their reading log (using the same process . I am interested to see what they come up with on an assignment after their interest has been piqued by a visit to the museum.
I also appreciated his note about talking to them about how I read and study, and plan to incorporate this into my class going forward, especially as we get into the research sections after next week.
