Hi Writing Center Class: Looking forward to working with you and getting to know you!

About me: I earned my Master's in Linguistics-TESOL and my doctorate in English: Language, Literacy, and Rhetoric at the U of Illinois at Chicago.  I've been a Rhetoric prof and WC Director for  29 years!

My academic writing is about second language issues, including those related to the writing center (WC); our current WC project is about Iowa's international students' perceptions of their second language writing development; I'll be sharing some of it with you in class.

I also like to write creatively and personally about travel and language-learning ,and I teach travel writing as a first-year seminar every fall. In my free time, I hang out with my granddaughters, 9 and 2.  I'm also in the process of rehabbing my new knee!

  1. Hi folks,

I'm not sure if I'm posting this correctly but here it goes--I am a second-year PhD Candidate in English Literature, working in the long 19th century of British Literature and specializing in science, crime, and the Gothic. I was a Teaching Assistant last year in Foundations of the English Major, and am starting my second semester as a Rhetoric 1030 Graduate Instructor. In my non-work time, I like to knit and have just started training for a 5K this spring. Very excited to get started here!

    Best,
    Kathleen

  2. Hi everyone,

I'm a first year TA in the Rhetoric Department and a poet at the Writers' Workshop. I did my BA here at UI, but am originally from KC, MO.

Prior to grad school I worked as a yoga instructor. I still practice yoga and am also a runner.

I'm looking forward to getting to know you all this spring!

    Best,
    Bri

  3. Hi everyone,

I am a second year Phd student in the Spanish & Portuguese Department, working on Peninsular Literature in the 19th century with a specific focus on Hispanofilipina literature (basically texts about the Philippines during the Spanish occupation). I am a teaching assistant in the Spanish & Portuguese Department, but this year I will also be working at the Spanish Speaking and Writing Center, and that's why I am in this course (auditing).

I also like to travel and write about my travels (I used to have a travel blog). But, I've recently been enjoying exercise through different types of dances and simple workouts at the gym.

Very excited to have class with everyone this semester!
    See you all this week,
    Bethanny

  4. Hi folks!

I write music and poetry and am currently working towards a PhD in Music Composition. I sincerely love writing. My current projects include fifty poems about fifty states, and reconstructing the sound of the extinct Passenger Pigeon.

I've taught three semesters of Rhetoric, and before that I taught adjunct music lessons at some small colleges in Illinois.

I occupy my non-work time with graphic design, blueprints, and learning about railroad history.

    See you all soon!

  5. Hi everyone,

I am José, first year PhD student in the Spanish Literature program with a concentration in creative writing. I finished the MFA in Spanish Creative Writing at UI last year. I will be auditing this class and working in the Spanish writing center this semester. I like philosophy and psychoanalysis. I worked for several years as a fine artist, but have since been focused exclusively on literature.

    See you in class.

    José

Before coming to UIOWA, I worked in academic publishing and played guitar along the East Coast.

Looking forward to the semester with you all!

  7. Hey all!

I'm Ashlyn, and I'm from a tiny (seriously, tiny) town half an hour east of St. Louis. I'm a second year PhD student in American Studies, but I'm leaving my program after this year. I have increasingly realized that what I am supposed to be doing is teaching. No matter how anything else is going (and last semester was Rough), when I get in the classroom to teach, everything feels right.

I am planning to apply to the nonfiction writing program for the fall of 2021, however, because that does seem more in line with the kind of writing I prefer to do. And, ya know, marginally better job prospects with an MFA.

My BA and MA are both from the University of Chicago, in English and History respectively. My academic (and general) interests include: Gothic fiction, the railroad and trains, labor history, childrens' literature, camp, humor, gender and sexuality things, education history and theory, amateur psychologizing, television, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

In my downtime, I procrastinate, coach gymnastics, occasionally read, play any and all of the board games, watch a truly indecent amount of television, hang out with my dog, Teddy, a delightful 7-year-old Chihuahua, and write far too long introductions of myself for class blogs.

Look forward to learnin' with y'all this semester!

  8. Hi everyone, my name is Sanjna and I'm a first year in the Non Fiction Writing Program (NWP) and am at work on a memoir. It's my second semester teaching Rhetoric and I look forward to working in the writing center this semester as well.

I got my BA in Political Science and French at Bryn Mawr College after which I worked in the television business for many years (as a Producer/Director on non-fiction programming, mostly for Discovery, but also History, Travel, Logo, Vh1 and the Food Network).

I"m originally from India, and divide my time between the US and India. Looking forward to meeting you all in person!
